Project Summary

An elderly client needed a simple railing put in going into her basement. When she bought the house she found that for some reason they had removed the existing railing, and she didn’t feel very safe going down the stairs. She also wanted me to make it removable if she needed to fit furniture over it. She decided that she was going to paint it.

Project Challenges

Unfortunately because the staircase wraps around and goes down another two steps, the newel post didn’t reach all the way down. I built a small box to exact specifications, and blended the post and box together with wood filler for a seamless look once painted.
