Project Summary

The Now Playing Family Centre in Kincardine had a problem: half the lights in the large party room wouldn’t turn on. After asking some questions, it turned out that someone had been in to install a security system – and after they left the lights didn’t work. After some digging around, I found the problem: someone had drilled into the romex wire to the switch, ripping it apart. I had to take off a lot of drywall so I could replace the whole wire – by code, you cannot have a hidden connection, so I couldn’t just repair it in the wall. After removing the old wire, I put in a new one, made all the connections, and voila, there was light again. I then put all the drywall back, taped and mudded, and then painted it. You’d never know I had ripped it all open!

Project Challenges

The difficult part was figuring out where the wires all went – in order to figure out which wire was which I had to trace them from the electrical panel, as they fed many lights and even the door sign outside. We had to bring in a scissor lift so I could get to the ceiling to check, and I made a very complicated electrical schematic to understand it all. Once I understood it, I was good to go, but it definitely took a good few hours.
