Project Summary

These customers live at a retirement condo complex, and their doorbell had been broken for ages. Being a little hard of hearing, it was difficult sometimes to hear the knocking. I checked all the components of the doorbell, which is the door switch, the transformer, and the chime unit. I found some very weird voltages at the chime unit – so I decided to replace it. After I wired it in, they finally had a working doorbell again.

Project Challenges

I’ve done a lot of electrical troubleshooting, so it’s very easy for me. But I had never worked on a doorbell before. Once you know how circuits work it’s just a matter of figuring out what does what and why – I just didn’t know the voltages required at the chime unit. This wasn’t too difficult of a project, just slow and careful – it’s only 24 volts I’m working with, but that can still be a nasty shock.
